Creating Depth and Distance in Painting
A common question encountered in studio practice is: How do you successfully translate tangible depth and long-range atmospheric perspective onto a flat canvas?
Achieving spatial dimension relies on controlling several key visual elements:
- Value & Atmospheric Scaling: Use lighter values for background elements. This can be achieved by mixing foreground mixtures with titanium white or applying transparent glazes of cool grays.
- Edge Control & Focus: Soften structural edges and transitions as objects recede. Keeping sharp details concentrated on your foreground focal points mimics natural optical depth.
- Proportional Scale: Objects naturally decrease in size relative to their distance from the viewer's perspective.
